Ants
Ants
are now the number one household pest in the United
States. They are a big problem commercially as
well. There are more new species of ants
that we have to deal with every year, their colony
sizes are growing, and they are migrating around
the world.
Probably the most important ant that we must deal
with in southeast Texas, is the Red Imported Fire
Ant. They are a multi-million dollar problem
that, if you have experienced, you don't need
to be told why. They are mean, they sting,
and it hurts. We have seen their colonies
inside walls of homes as tall as eight feet, and
as wide as four feet. They damage electrical switches
on air conditioning units, swimming pool pumps,
and outdoor lighting. PPP does the "Texas
Two-Step" developed by Texas
A&M University to help reduce their populations
in lawns both commercially and residentially.
Pharaoh ants, pavement ants, crazy ants, and now
even odorous house ants have become regular complaints
from our customers. While bait works very
well for some, it doesn't work at all on others. Probably
the best advice we can give to most homeowners
is, if you have ants, it's best not to spray
them. Almost all of the "spray"
products available over the counter will make
your ant problem worse instead of better. Try
the available baits if you like, but when they
eventually fail, call the pro, and we'll get
them going in the right direction.

Finally,
a word about carpenter ants. In south east
Texas, carpenter ants do very little damage to
structures. They are usually only in your
home because of a moisture issue, and frequently,
if you solve the moisture problem, you will solve
your ant problem. Their damage is very slow,
and usually to wood that is not sound. Years
ago, a carpenter ant job meant drilling into all
potential voids to inject insecticide, which could
be very expensive. We now have baits that
are readily accepted by carpenter ants, and
most jobs are less than $250.
